Critical Morphological Sampling and Its Applications to Image Coding
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we introduce a new morphological sampling theory and show some of its applications to image coding. As in previous works on morphological sampling, we establish conditions that the signal should satisfy before (sub)sampling in order to meet a prescribed reconstruction error criteria. In contrast to previous theorems, however, the whole process is self dual. When compared to previous morphological schemes, Critical Morphological Sampling can save up to half the number of samples. We also establish a set of conditions under which the new theorem is Critical, i.e., a more sparse sampling grid could produce an unbounded reconstruction error (in a Hausdorr sense). We use the theorem to design a Morphological Pyramid Coder, similar to a Laplacian Pyramid Coder. The results not only are superior to the Laplacian Pyramid, but are found to be competitive with more complex linear coders, like the DCT-based JPEG.

Visual Pattern Image Coding by a Morphological Approach (RESEARCH NOTE)
This paper presents an improvement of the Visual Pattern image coding (VPIC) scheme presented by Chen and Bovik in [2] and [3]. The patterns in this improved scheme are defined by morphological operations and classified by absolute error minimization. The improved scheme identifies more uniform blocks and reduces the noise effect. Therefore, it improves the compression ratio and image quality i...
متن کاملImplementation of VlSI Based Image Compression Approach on Reconfigurable Computing System - A Survey
Image data require huge amounts of disk space and large bandwidths for transmission. Hence, imagecompression is necessary to reduce the amount of data required to represent a digital image. Thereforean efficient technique for image compression is highly pushed to demand. Although, lots of compressiontechniques are available, but the technique which is faster, memory efficient and simple, surely...
متن کاملFace Recognition using an Affine Sparse Coding approach
Sparse coding is an unsupervised method which learns a set of over-complete bases to represent data such as image and video. Sparse coding has increasing attraction for image classification applications in recent years. But in the cases where we have some similar images from different classes, such as face recognition applications, different images may be classified into the same class, and hen...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection and Localization of Surface Cracks in Continuously Cast Hot Steel Slabs Using Digital Image Analysis Techniques
Quality inspection is an indispensable part of modern industrial manufacturing. Steel as a major industry requires constant surveillance and supervision through its various stages of production. Continuous casting is a critical step in the steel manufacturing process in which molten steel is solidified into a semi-finished product called slab. Once the slab is released from the casting unit, th...
متن کاملSkeleton-based morphological coding of binary images
This paper presents new properties of the discrete morphological skeleton representation of binary images, along with a novel coding scheme for lossless binary image compression that is based on these properties. Following a short review of the theoretical background, two sets of new properties of the discrete morphological skeleton representation of binary images are proved. The first one lead...
